| I found these directions for a handmade trellis on a listserv. I haven't tried it yet but thought some of you might be interested. If you have made one in the past (Sue?) or try this one let us know how it goes. Is it as easy as it seems? How sturdy is it?
"Trim saplings to about a yard and a half in length. (They should be at least two fingers thick.) When you've got a pile just larger than you can carry in one trip, cut three saplings to the desired hight of your trellis. (I recommend chest hight, or slightly less) These saplings should be at least as thick as a woman's wrist, and can be as thick as a man's wrist. Lay the three thick saplings on the ground parallel to each other. Begin at the bottom of the trellis, about six inches from the bottom, and lay the fist of your thin saplings perpendicular to the three thick saplings. With the twine, wrap and tie the three intersections of the thin sapling and the thick saplings. Repeat until you reach the top of the thick saplings. Next, drive two or three 1"x2" boards into the ground in the garden, bring your trellis over, and tie it (many times per
support) to the stakes."

| Welcome to Seeds & Sprouts, the blog just for early educators and gardeners in Windham County! This is the place to share ideas, ask questions, brag about your successes and get suggestions for your challenges.
Here's how it works
You need to create a log-in to participate. Once you do you can write your own diary and add comments to current diaries. Your diary can be about anything - something you want to share, a problem you are having, or your observations about life in the garden. Just remember this is the internet so don't use children's last names or your phone number or email address.
Photos are a little more complicated. They need to be somewhere on the internet like Flickr, PhotoBucket, Ringo or one of the other photo sites. If you have a great picture but need help you can email it to me here at Windham Child Care and I will get it on the blog for you. Please don't email more than one or two photos at a time.
Let's get started! |
